What is and how it looks?
The hard-disk is found as a box of about 12 cm long, 7 wide and 2 high. If I had to open such a device, inside we will find some electronic circuits, 1 or more platters (discs) of aluminum, 2 or more of read / write heads and 2 engine.

Classification
Hard drives ranks by:
- rotation speed / rpm (revolutions per minute), eg: 5400, 7200, 10000, 15000 li>
- access speed (speed moving of heads from one position to another reading position), eg: 12 ms, 9 ms, 6 ms li>
- transfer rate (amount of data transferred expressed in MB / sec), eg: 0.3, 1.2, 3.6, 10, 30, 66, 120, 250, 300, 310 li>
- capacity (amount stored on all turntables), ie 0.4 MB, 1.2 GB, 10 GB, 20 GB, 40 GB, 80 GB, 120 GB, 200 GB, 320 GB, 400 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB, 1 TB li>
- interface (how the connection is made between hardware and computer), eg IDE , S-ATA , SCSI li>
- way of combining (coupling of 2 or more HDD's mixed forms a RAID), eg: RAID 0 (strip, 2 identical hard drives are coupled to obtain a double transfer speed), RAID 1 (two identical hard drives are joined to form an active backup system). If one of the hard drives "fail", the second will remain in function, RAID 0 +1 (4 hard drives are put in a strip and mirror mode), RAID JBOD (Just a bunch of disks - 2 or more hard sites are put together to get a single disk) li>
- company producing, ex: Seagate, Maxtor, IBM, Hitachi li>
- physical size (physical dimensions of a disk), ex: 5.25 ", 3.5", 2.5 " li>
- supply, eg: internal or external li>

How it works
At startup hard disk or hard drive as it is called, starts a little engine that sets into motion the disc / discs. In the next phase is set in motion and ends with read / write who perform a brief functional test. The heads floating above of the turntables are very small and has a very precise distance, they never were met.
When the computer's BIOS startup finishes its tests, it will call on the hard drive for reading operating system (OS) . All necessary data, are read and written to the device, whenever you need. The data is stored magnetically, similar to a video store on a videotape, the difference being an enormously high accuracy over the latter use, access speed, anywhere on the disc and a much higher transfer rate.

Internal hard disks drives are extremely fragile and are sealed in their box to protect from smallest dust particles or / and any other impurities that could very easily lead, to damage their platens right away. So beware, do not ever taken apart a hard drive unless you do not you will ever use.
During shutdown's computer, after saving the last setting of the operating system, the current stops in most of the computer, including hard drive. When stop working, based on inertia, read / write heads, are parking somewhere through the center of the disc, on a place designed specifically for this operation. In early hard-disk drives in case of power failure, the reading heads hadn't parked, landing where it was working, resulting in a physical damage to the disk. Nowadays heads will park on the energy loss rate, to protect the disc surface.
The use
Hard disk are used for storing data of any kind of movies, music, games and any other software, or what documents you own. If we make an analogy we can compare with a very diverse library where we can put multiple books, documents, tapes etc.
Storage mode
The data are read and written by the heads, like a pick-up. Heads pass over the turntables, without touching them and splashed the surface with electrons with different voltage polarities, recognized as the binary system of 0 and 1.
Information is written on a circular disk from inside to outside and is divided into sections.
Brief History
If until 2 decades ago, hard drives were a luxury, there on any computer, today we can find the fixed disks on any workstation.
Hard drives have emerged as a necessity for storage space growing proportions.
In 1956 the first hard drive was incorporated into a computer and have a capacity of only 5 MB and was the size of a refrigerator.
In 1960, Winchester develop a hard disk at a speed rate of 30 MB per second axis.
Only in 1980, Seagate developed the first hard drive for personal computers ST506, with a capacity of 40 MB. They weren't still the size of today hard drives (3.5 inches), but 5.25 inches.
In 1983, the first hard drive of 3.5 inches, is produced by the company Rodime.
In 1992, makes its appearance first hard disk with a capacity of 1 GB.
In 1997, Seagate develops the first hard-disk interface U-ATA, with a speed of 33 MB / sec and disc rotation of 15000 rpm (revolutions per minute).

In 2004 Toshiba, got off the market a new model of hard drive incredible size of 0.85 of a turntable, with a capacity of 2 and 4 GB.

In April 2007, Hitachi developed the first hard drive of 1 TB (terabyte), Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.
In September 2007 Hitachi, launch a 2.5-inch hard drive, with a capacity of 320 GB.

Multumesc anticipat!!
